The direct answer
Your Sun sign describes the direction of the self you consciously develop. Your Moon sign describes instinctive emotional needs and familiar reactions. Your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, describes the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon—and sets the starting point for the twelve houses.

Accuracy before atmosphere
Zodiaro does not infer the Moon or Ascendant from a generic birthday table. It calculates a chart from a specific moment and place.
Your local birth time is converted to Coordinated Universal Time using the historical timezone associated with your selected birthplace. The calculation then uses Swiss Ephemeris planetary positions in the tropical zodiac. When an exact time is present, the Ascendant and Placidus house cusps are calculated from the location coordinates.
Read the complete calculation methodologyIf you mark the time as unknown, Zodiaro does not manufacture an Ascendant. The result clearly withholds time-dependent angles and houses. That makes a partial answer less dramatic, but more honest.
The selected city provides coordinates and a historical timezone—not your device’s current timezone.
The service resolves the Sun, Moon, planets, angles, and house cusps for that moment.
Your results include the zodiac, house system, and ephemeris method used for the calculation.
One chart, three lenses
The Big Three are most useful when read as a relationship, not as three disconnected labels.
| Placement | Core question | What changes it | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | What am I growing toward? | Usually changes sign monthly | Purpose, vitality, conscious identity |
| Moon | What helps me feel safe and restored? | Changes sign about every 2–3 days | Needs, habits, instinctive reactions |
| Rising | How do I meet what is in front of me? | Changes roughly every two hours | Approach, first impression, house framework |
Read the pattern
A person with a bold Fire Sun may still process feelings cautiously through an Earth Moon. A reserved Rising sign can make an expressive Sun less obvious in a first meeting. Repeated elements can create a strong, consistent style; mixed elements can describe productive inner contrast.
After calculation, look first for repetition: shared signs, elements, or modalities. Then look for tension. A difference is not a flaw—it often describes the adjustment that makes the chart personally recognizable.

Popular date ranges are convenient summaries, but the Sun does not enter each sign at the same clock time every year. If you were born near a boundary, the year, time, and timezone can decide which side of that boundary the Sun occupied.
The Moon moves much faster, and the horizon faster still. That is why a complete Big Three calculation asks for more than your birthday and why an exact birth certificate time is preferable to family memory when it is available.

The useful answer is the one that states what can—and cannot—be calculated from the details you have.
The Big Three are your Sun sign, Moon sign, and Rising sign. Astrologers commonly read them as a concise introduction to conscious identity, emotional needs, and the way you approach new situations.
Use your birth date, the local time recorded at birth, and your birthplace. The date locates the Sun and Moon; the time and coordinates are needed to calculate the eastern horizon and therefore the Rising sign.
You can still calculate a useful partial chart, but Zodiaro will withhold the Rising sign and houses when the time is unknown instead of presenting a guess as an exact result. The Moon may also need a time check on a day when it changed signs.
Date tables use approximate sign boundaries. An astronomical calculation uses the year, local time, timezone, and location, which matters most for cusp birthdays and always matters for the Ascendant.
Yes. The Ascendant is the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the birth moment; Rising sign is the everyday name for the sign containing that degree.
Yes. You can calculate your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs and begin a complete birth chart without creating an account or entering payment details.
Zodiaro converts the local birth moment to UTC using the historical timezone for the selected place, then uses Swiss Ephemeris positions with the tropical zodiac. Placidus houses are calculated only when an exact birth time is available.
The Big Six adds Mercury, Venus, and Mars to the Sun, Moon, and Rising sign. Together they offer a compact view of identity, emotion, approach, communication, affection, and action.
